Skupina byla založena roku 1998 a skládá se ze čtyř členů: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimiho Westbrooka a Phillipa Sweeta. Všichni členové mají stejné postavení, tj. není hlavní zpěvák a každý má svou část písní. Navíc Jimi a Phillip doprovází skupinu hrou na kytaru.
Počátky skupiny ale sahají dále. V roce 1987 se setkaly Karen a Kim a začaly spolu zpívat. V roce 1998 se k nim přidal Jimi a o rok později Phillip.
